I have an online friend who I just found out is only 14! Will I get in trouble for just talking to her?

Question - (25 November 2008) 3 Answers - (Newest, 25 November 2008)
A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I started speaking to a girl on facebook because I like her style of fashion etc. Have been talking about music, hair, make up, clothes etc as no one I know is into this particular thing (which is why I found someone on facebook as no one to speak to about these styles and culture etc) Anyway I just found out she is only 14!! (I did not know how old she was - I assumed she was older as she looks much older)

Now I feel really weird - I dont know what to do or if I would get into trouble for talking to her. I am NOT / NEVER interested in her in a romantic way at ALL. It was just a friend to speak to about fashion and music. Also she lives in another country all together.

I do not know what to do. If I carry on speaking to her (on a platonic level of course!) would I get into trouble with the law? Or should I just stop speaking to her altogether now? It feels wrong so not sure if it is if I carried on chatting to her?

Thanks

Why would you get in trouble with the law? Say you were talking to 14 year old family member, would you get in trouble for talking to her? Of course not. There is no law that dictates who you are or are not allowed to talk to.

However, if the talking has been sexually suggestive then it's a whole different matter indeed...

I do not know about the laws of your country, but here in the USA if you are not romantically involved, and never type anything that could be remotely construed that way, then there is no law against talking to minors. I'd still watch what I type, though, just in case.

well i dont see why you would get into any trouble with the law if you werent doing/saying anything sexual or asking her out or anything! But for your safetly and hers i would dicontinue talking with this girl. Just to be on the safeside. Considering she is only 14.
