I have an interview tomorrow, should I take the job or hang out for more offers?

Okay so I normally only post relationship questions but I am desperate for help right now and I don't have anywhere to turn. I am currently looking for a new job and I sent a number of resumes out today. I also got a response from one company and have an interview set up for tomorrow. But I don't know if I REALLY want to take this job. It would be a good job but it's only been a couple hours and I would like to see if I get any response from the other companies.

So if the interview tomorrow goes well and they make me an offer, how should I handle the situation and what should I tell them? I don't want to risk not getting this job if no one else calls, but I also want to wait and see if there might be a better offer from another place. If anyone can help me out I would be so grateful.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (21 August 2009):

Ok, so you've got an interview with what you consider a second tier employer, let's say Second Cup when you really want to work at Starbucks. What to do?

I would counsel you to see how the interview goes, give it your all and see what they've got to offer. Perhaps they may realize you are not the one they're looking for or you may realize that given the requirements of the new job, it really isn't what you want to do or where you want to work.

Play it by ear.

If your worst fears are realized and they ask you to take the job you'll have to add some wiggle room to your acceptance. You'll have to say that you thank them for their offer and ask them how long do you have to accept it.

You may say that you are considering another job that is closer to where you live, etc. Or you can tell the interviewer straight out that this is one of many interviews you have lined up and that you are considering offers at the moment. They may ante up right away if you're an ideal candidate. Again, play it by ear. How does the interviewer react to your need for time?

Whatever you do don't refuse any offers. Just tell the interviewer you will consider his offer and respond in a timely manner. Be professional and courteous.
