I have terminated the friendship as I feel that I am not good for his marriage. However, it hurts and I wondered if you have any suggestions on how to get over a 12 year emotional affair.

It sounds like your relationship was in some way putting a strain on the marriage of your friend, so it is best that you have backed off, yes you are hurting and as you know only time will heal this.
Try and get out to meet other couples, do you dance, play cards, go to the pub these are all places to meet others
If you have the money and like cruise ship holidays or coach outings these are excellent ways to meet other couples.
Do you have friends of your own sex, maybe you could start trying to meet other friends.
You have done the right thing and your heart will mend in time.
