A female reader, anonymous, writes (28 January 2010):

Don't be ashamed of your body. I know that's way harder to do, but just see it as something you want to change. Don't add the weight of shame to your existence. It doesn't really help anything.

Anyways, just find some type of physical activity that interests you. Engage in it at least 3 times a week for an hour or so. Don't push yourself to the point of exhaustion though, but do build up a sweat. Build up your level of exertion gradually.

Biggest rule would be don't consume alot of sugary foods or drinks (also anything with corn syrup), refined flour(white flour), saturated fats (found in dairy products, and certain meats). When you eat much sugar and refined carbohydrates, your body produces more insulin to metabolise them. The more insulin your pancreas pumps out to deal with excess calories/sugar/carbohydrates, the more belly fat you will end up having. I don't exactly know why this to be the case, though there is a scientifically proven correlation.

Don't diet. It is bad for you. Just change your diet. Don't starve yourself at all. Not even for a month.

Focus on eating lots of:

Veggies

Fruits

Lean protein, especially fish or chicken/turkey if you don't like fish

Eggs every other morning if you want them. It's actually a good idea to start each day eating some protein like two eggs and maybe also something filling like oatmeal sweetened with honey.

A little bit of cheese, but not a huge amount

Whole grains, beans, unprocessed rice (not instant white rice!)

Lots of water

Green tea

When you need to use a fat, season your food with 'good' fats like vegetable oils: Olive oil, walnut oil, almond oil, etc. Same goes for salad dressings-try to use oil based dressings, not dairy and egg based dressings.

Salt is okay in moderation

Eat when you really notice you're hungry. If you need to snack when you're not hungry, eat veggies or fruits.

If possible, walk more or ride a bike to do your errands, rather than using a car/taking the metro or bus.

Eat junk food/super fattening food once in a while if you really miss them, but don't do it often. Maybe once a week. Try not to over eat (feel stuffed), unless you're stuffing yourself with something low fat and low calorie, like fruits and vegetables.

As for losing the stomach fat and not boob fat or hip fat, I'd say don't turn into a fat burning machine. Don't become addicted to exercise (like every day of the week hardcore aerobic) or eat a terribly strict diet. Don't cut out fat from your diet. Some people go to the extreme when they just wanted to start out losing a bit of weight, and they loose all of their 'assets' (their boobs and their butt) in the process.

This could go on and on, but I don't know exactly the lifestyle you live right now, so I'm not going to say much more. Be kind to yourself and patient. Make a few changes you're willing to keep, and with time your shape will change.

DoubleM agony auntTry to walk about two miles a day, or at least every other day. One mile to start is ok. Walk fast as you can. Quit drinking soft drinks and opt for water all the time. Cut sugar, candy, junk and most fast food and you will amaze yourself in about three or four months. Then you will owe me a kiss on the cheek.
