Although I'll be gutted cos I know how upset he will be, I know it's the right thing to do. Thanks for all your advice :) xxxxx

Nope, you are going to have to hurt him if he loves you and you don't love him.
Tell him that you don't feel the same way and you don't want to be with him. You can't lead him on or suggest that it might work out with time, you have to tell him that there is no hope and then leave him alone for a while.
Don't try and be friends straight away either because he will not get over you.
