A female reader, need help here i am United Kingdom +, writes (25 October 2007):

i wouldnt need to be to concered about sit ups if i was you as i use to do but i then started to get back pain and my gp told me to stop. if you would like to tone up you should try to do this lie flat on your back and your arms beside you, you then lift both of your legs up at the same keeping them a few inches off the floor (eg 4) time its essential to keep your legs straight whilst doing this, every 30 seconds move your legs a few inches higher. and hold for yet anouther 30 seconds if your do this for 10 minutes a day to begin with, then moving the time up to twenty minutes as you get used to them you will have that lovely toned stomache youve always dreamed for in no time i hope you use my advise and have good luck with this yours sincerely need help here i am

A male reader, Zim United Kingdom +, writes (25 October 2007):

Zim agony auntLie on your back, knees bent to about 70 degrees. If you have a friend there, get them to sit on your feet. If not, use a heavy bag. Then put both hands behind your head and bring yourself up (using your stomach, not your hands - they are there just to support your head) slowly and down slowly. You can vary it slightly by doing them to the side too.

With regard to how many, it depends entirely on how much you are willing to do. Do them until you feel a burn in and around your stomach, and then do about 5 more and rest for at least 2 minutes. Then probably do 2 more sets to begin with. Once you become more comfortable doing exercise, you will know how far you can go.

Alternatively, you could use a gym ball (also known as a swiss ball). You can get a decent one from Argos for about £4.99 and its perfect for toning up muscles in your stomach area. It comes with pictures and exercises you can do. Unfortunately I can't tell you the exercises on here as they are more of a demonstration type.

Running is also a good way of complementing these exercises as you tense your abdominals slightly when you run.

Don't expect too much though at your age. Things like this will take time. Just go easy and steady and you'll get there.

Good luck!

ZIM
