A female , anonymous writes:

they say the course of true love never runs smoothly. I am 30 yrs old and dont know if I have never known it or have just dated guys who are f*** up. Is it me? do I not know what it is, I think I do, I have my parents as a great example. Are these troubles the course of true love or again the cues to turn and run. I only ask out of experiences and I have to ask is it me or just that men are from mars and women from venus? Can you trust your gut feelings when they are so clouded with feelings of love and confusion? Leave, stay, me or him? They also say all is fair in love and war, what does that mean?????

A female reader, Jadzia1127 United States +, writes (20 July 2006):

Jadzia1127 agony aunt Most people find a love that can last a lifetime and call it true love. True love is not a once in a lifetime thing, It is a miracle.

True love is rare and most people do not find it. The few people who have experienced it can only tell you that it is like magic, the love runs smoothly, it's life that doesn't.

On average people 'fall in love' 7 to 8 times in their lives. Each time getting smarter about what they want and what will truly make them happy. So the last few times of 'falling' they will choose one to spend their lives with. Then we all get to go to a wedding and hope they last.

As for your gut feelings, it is just your subconscious trying to get your attention. I guess what you should be asking yourself is, should you trust your sub conscience? Does your sub-conscience put you down with things like, I am fat, I don't look good, I hate my 'body part', he would never like me, etc.? If it does then don't go with your gut, get a second opinion. If it is an uplifting and encouraging subconscious such as, I can do this, I look great, this will be easy etc. then listen to it.

The saying 'All is fair in love and war' has been traced back to John Lyly's 'Euphues' (1578). The proverb is found in varying forms. The proverb is frequently used to justify cheating." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman ( Random House, N.Y., 1996).

So who ever 'they' is I would assume they like to state the saying to justify hurting those they love and you shouldn't bother with them.

I did notice you already have your answer on men staring at you in the face, your parents. They found a love that can last a lifetime or even true love, they can point you in the right direction with any guy. Let them really get to know any guy your interested in, and listen to their opinion then listen to your 'gut' if it is a nice 'gut'.

GOOD LUCK
