I cried on my 18th because I wasn't 17 anymore! So how can I get over my fear of growing older?

On my 18th birthday I cried because I wasn't seven anymore. I've always been scared of getting older, one - 'cause it means I'll have less life, and two - 'cause I'm scared of losing my abilities.

I work hard and I've heard that when you become forty or fifty you get tired easily, and you can't do as much. I really believe what Sarte said that life is about taking action and responsibility.

I'm really scared that I'll lose my ability to think or work hard when I'm old. How to address this fear?

(God, I've never cried while writing a question before)

Hiya

God! you sweet little thing, you made me cry with laughter and my roommates, who have teased me because i have just turned 40! i guess I'm on the scarp heap might as well retire and go and lay down and just accept old age is upon me. I am finished and no longer needed in society I'm on my way out. SERIOUSLY now...yes 40 the other day and one cool looking sexy lady that will stand next to any 20 year old and feel great. On the physical body side i am a DANCER and still training in contemporary modern dance, fit as a butchers dog but better looking. Cocky just like i was as a teenager. Men well i have one when ever i feel like a bit of energetic fun. FINISHED I HAVENT EVEN STARTED and the SECRET is young fun positive spirit makes dates that the body can not keep ( in my dreams when I'm 90) SECOND SECRET old worrying negative spirit ( will never be young because they are not in the moment enjoying every second).

I'LL SLEEP WHEN IM DEAD! MAYBE! DOUBT IT I WILL COME DOWN TO EARTH AND PLAY AGAIN LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE, AND THE SPIRIT IS AGELESS. I LOVE LOOKING AT A FACE THAT LOOKS LIVED IN, AND EYES THAT TWINKLE, AND A MOUTH THAT SMILES AND ECHOES OF LAUGHTER. NEVER WORRY ABOUT GROWING OLD YOU DONT HAVE TIME TO WORRY OLD AGE CREEPS UP BLOODY FAST, SO ENJOY YOUR YOUTH WHILE YOU CAN. AND FROWNING WILL CREASE YOUR FACE...BE HAPPY DONT WORRY WE ALL PASS THROUGH THE HANDS OF TIME. SHAKE HIS HAND WHEN YOUR TURN COMES, AS IT WILL AND SAY '' I HAD A BLAST IN LIFE AND LIVED IT FULLY''

TIP! TO STAY YOUNG CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE TO AGE NOW WHILE YOU ARE YOUNG.

I've just turned 60. My best years are probably behind me now but I can still remember the best times of my life and they would be from about the age of 30 onwards.

In my terms you're just setting out on the great adventure of life, not coming towards the end of it. Even at my age, I enjoy life and all it has to offer. I still enjoy sex, albeit rather less frantic or frequent and with one woman rather than several, but the quality is better. I still enjoy the same hobbies as I did back then and I'm altogether a lot happier too. I can afford to do a lot more now that the kids have long fled the nest. I know a lot more now than I did then. Growing older has a lot to be said for it! I guess I've got about 25 years left and I'm sure going to make the most of every one of them.

Like the first answer says, you might get run over by a bus tomorrow, so make the most of every day as if it was your last, because one day it might be.

I hit 25 this year. I was DISTRAUGHT.

But this year I have come forward in my career, travelled to a warzone to report from there, and next week I am off to a film premiere.

It's scary getting older but it does get better as you do.

Good Luck!! xx

eyeswideopen agony auntI'm 56 and I still manage to get around on my own steam pretty good, hee hee. I'm still smarter than my kids and the dogs. I still have my own teeth and the inner organs are still intact and working (well a couple have gone into early retirement but that actually works for me). I still can laugh, cry, yell, whisper... I work full time and enjoy it AND I WOULD NEVER WANT TO BE 17 EVER EVER EVER AGAIN!

you dont lose your abilities as you grow older, you learn new ones to add to old ones and become a wiser person. each year i think lifes drifing on but then i have think to myself all the new things Im going to get to do now Ive got to that new age. Your going to be taken so much more seriously now and everyone will value your opinions a lot more. And just think your one step closer to reaching the goals in your life :)

I am a 45 year old woman. I can tell you from experience that I feel "inside" the same at this age as when I was your age. I do not tire easily. If you keep yourself in shape you will be fine most likely. I do not think slower!

If I had a time machine to turn back the clock, do you know what age I would pick? 35. Yes, 35! Life is a lot easier for me now than when I was young. For one, I am not broke and desperate anymore.

There is nothing you can do to stop the future from coming. If you can't do anything about it, don't fret it, as fretting it will just suck the life out of you.

I once asked my mother in law who was in her 60's if she was afraid of dying. She says there is nothing she can do about it, that everyone dies, so she doesn't worry about it.

The lottery of life. Just look after your body and mind the best you can.

But there is no guarantee you won't get knocked down by a bus tomorrow.

Sorry
