Sounds like you have a good dude....I wouldn't worry about his visting a inmate in jail. I think it is admirable since many female inmates do not get visits at all. I would evefn write her myself if I knew where she was

I wouldn't worry to much yet, chances are he was only visiting her for emotional support as a friend (and nothing else). I wouldn't get to worked about it, but its obviously distressing you so you should talk to your partner about it more.
At no extent should you be jumping to conclusions just yet (for a start, shes still in prison) - I would sit down and talk to your partner about your feelings, tell him you are upset and confused as to why he went to see his ex in prison and ask for a proper reason.
