Im 43 and have been with my 18 year old partner for the last 7 months and we are blissfully happy. We are totally in love and both couldn't be happier. It worried me at first, but he has always said that age is just a number; we didnt plan any of this, it just happened, we love each other and thats all that matters. We totally click and just work really well together. The only down side is that nobody knows. He's a friend of my daughter and she'd freak if she knew. She wouldnt understand. We have to meet in secret and that gets harder and harder and is frustrating as hell. We are going to come clean pretty soon because we want to be together properly but just know that everyone will say we're sick and blame me. We're not. We just fell in love and happen to be different in age. It happens sometimes. So, personally, I would just talk to her and tell her how you feel. If she's a decent person she'll talk to you honestly and then you'll know. If she feels the same, she's possibly scared too, but if you both want the same thing, its legal, and no-one will get hurt, then go for it. Its your life and choice so be happy.

reader, anonymous, writes (17 October 2010): There is nothing legally wrong here and the only moral ambiguity here is that she's a friend of your mother, which WILL be a bit of an issue.
You two would have to sneak around, and no healthy relationship can be based on lies of any sort.
So if you are going to pursue this woman, then you WILL need to come clean at some point, and be ready to deal with the shit-storm it will likely kick up with your mother.
