Here are some things I suggest you check before choosing a counsellor:1. Qualifications2. Male or female counsellor - which would you be more comfortable with?3. What areas are they specialized in and do they offer any courses (eg: healthy thinking programms)4. Age of the counsellor5. Years of experience6. Follow up and Organisational support6. Website (check testimonials on their site)7. Accountability8. Price The person you choose needs to be right for the both of you so it is very important that after your first session you discuss with your husband whether or not you were both comfortable and found them helpful. If not select another counsellor, it may take some time to find the right person but you will both know. Good luck.

A lot of times word of mouth works best. For some people though, they can only pick based on what their insurance will cover.
Bottom line though, every therapist will have a bare minimum licensing as required by the state they're practicing in. Look up your states requirements for license requirements, and cross reference that with who your insurance approves of.
