He (and his friends) say that all cornish people are thick and that the majority of them are inbred with pointy heads and webbed feet. I know this sounds funny but I find it really upsetting. I feel I need to defend where I come from. It feels like a personal insult and makes me feel quite self conscious when I am trying to hold conversations with my boy-friend and his mates. They make comments like they should cut the chains of Cornwall and let it float away but we live in Devon which is just next door!! I know I shouldn't bite but how do I deal with their narrow-mindedness?? (They think they aren't being narrow-minded and simply just facing facts!) Help!!!! Reply to this Question Share |
Fancy yourself as an agony aunt? Add your answer to this question! A reader, R.C., writes (8 February 2005): Hmmm. This may sound like an obvious answer, but this guy is an idiot, and you should get rid of him smartish. Does he know how much it upsets you? If he does, then he's purposely upsetting you just because he thinks it's funny. If he loved you, he would want to bear your feelings in mind and avoid hurting them. It's the least you deserve as his girlfriend! The fact that the thing that's he's upsetting you with is a bigoted, narrow-minded point of view makes it worse. Would you accept be going out with him if you were an ethnic minority and he was racist? No, and if his comments actually reflect his opinion as he and his friends say it does, then you should get away from this fool and date someone with a little more intelligence.
