Yeah, just ask. Though some guys - especially if they are attempting to appear more mature than they really are - will be embarrassed to admit it.
And their overall nervousness, and skill level, are certainly circumstantial clues, but it may be difficult to tell "new-partner anxiety" from "first-time anxiety".
And if you're going to have sex with a guy, but don't already have a good idea about whether it's his first time or not, I suspect one of you (perhaps both) isn't really ready for this sexual relationship.
