I always feel stupid saying "Thanks, you're hot." or "You're handsome!" because it just sounds weird for some reason. What other words can you use to describe good looking guys? Hahaha. I always like, "You rock!". LOL.
I've been told that I'm "wonderful", that makes me feel good.
When complimented, I don't think you have to respond in kind. Just say "Thank you, that's nice of you to say." I don't think anyone expects a compliment in return.

Look like an orange and white fish? But I am one. On the internet, no one knows you're a fish...
The romantic compliment that I have received that was the most significant to me was that I made someone feel 'safe'. Doesn't sound like much maybe, but to me it meant a lot more than handsome or cute or similar.

Ooo, Yos, you are all those things..what a shame you look like an orange and white fish!! We luv ya anyhoo..
Just really look at him, make up your mind what it is about him that really makes him unique in your eyes, and tell him what attracts you to him, be it looks, physique, or as Yos says, sense of humour, personality etc. Sexy always works, too, and so does telling him that you are really glad you met him.
Try to say it before he compliments you, because if you just say it because he has said something nice, that is why it seems 'weird' - because it feel as if you are not sincere, like you are copying him, or something!

Just don't use the word 'hot'. That word is soooo over-used at the moment! Besides, it's the sort of thing Paris Hilton would say, and if you want to sound like her you might as well just go jump of the nearest bridge ;) Hot is a good way to describe how you like your coffee, not your men.
Looks are less important to men than other stuff, so if you really want to compliment them, mention other stuff. Like how intelligent they are, how funny, how cool, tough, confident etc. Handsome is fine too, but given the choice most men would probably rather be confident, funny and intelligent than handsome.
