 I definitely agree that you shouldn't say that you're the brunette he can't keep his eyes off of, you'll end up making him feel like a stalker.
Maybe instead of asking him on a date by writing in the card, you should write him a simple merry xmas card and give it to him. While you're handing him the card you can say to him "Here, I just wanted to say "Merry Christmas". Perhaps I can take you for coffee in the new year?" and see what happens...
Be subtle and not too over friendly, that might scare him away...
A coffee is innocent and friendly enough, you can go from there!
