A female United States age 26-29, *rettyGurl writes:

I'm 15 and I want to go on birth control, but I just don't know how to tell my mother. I want to be straight up with her but I'm scared that she will think I'm actually having sex when I'm not. I just want to be sure there aren't going to be any babies in the picture. How do I explain this to her without her getting the wrong idea?

tennisstar88 agony auntFluffy pie makes a good point..if you are on certain ones for long periods of time they can lead to infertility. I agree with the majority vote, if you're not engaging in sex why do you need them? Or unless you feel like you might and you want to be protected. There is a way to get birth control without your mother knowing...I used to go to this women's clinic where i saw 15 maybe 16 year olds walking in to get their checkup and birth control for free, the nurse will also give you condoms. Society gives you these resources so you can protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy or STDS. Look them up in the phone book to find a clinic near you.

fi_the_tree agony auntIf i were you, i would just tell her. I assume you will be 16 soon, and then may start to think about having sex.

If i had a daughter who said it to me, i'd be relieved that she had her head screwed on enough to at least go on birth control before having sex.

If she flips, just calmly explain that at least you're taking precautions before you have actually lost your virginity!!!!

Good luck!

If you're not having sex then there is no point on going on birth control. You are too young. I don't want to sound mean but get this idea out of your head.

A female reader, ShauniePrawnie United Kingdom +, writes (7 September 2010):

When I told my mother, admittedly I was a couple years older, I just told her that I wanted it to regulate my period and help my skin. She accepted it very easily but asked the old age question of 'are you having sex' (to which I turned bright red and mumbled a no - I can't help it, I'm a normal silly teenager when it comes to talking about sex to my Mum!).

What I'm trying to say is, all you need to do is explain the reasons for going on the pill and she should accept it. If not, it's just one of those things that you have to get over with her. She'll be far more happy to know you're safe than anything.

A female reader, FluffyPie United States +, writes (7 September 2010):

FluffyPie agony auntBirth control pills are not like candies, so you can take them just like that. Birth control pills are taken in case of unwanted pregnancy, when you start your sex life - but the mighty condom protects you waaaay better - or hormonal unbalance.

Also, they can provoke infertility when taken on long term, when you'll be a grown up and realize that you want to have babies. Now, you're only 15. At this age, nobody wants babies. Just don't have sex, enjoy your childhood. Or, if you have sex, let your boyfriend use a condom. It also protects from STDs.

Go to a doctor and see if it's really necessary for you to start taking them.
