I plan to go to college right after graduation. I'm from a single parent home and college is unheard of where I some from even though there are two colleges in the vicinity. No one told me about extracurriculars. Nobody told me how important service learning is. And now, I'm feeling like college may not be an obtainable goal for me because I don't have these things. I can't afford college and my parents wouldn't help me with the costs. I tried to find a job to help me with this but no one would hire me. I don't know why. I tried really hard. I even hounded some of the managers but it didn't work. I want to do something extrodinary with my life. I don't want to be like my parents and I'm willing to do what I have to to make sure that I don't but I feel so lost. I need help but it's like eveytime I turn around, nobody's there. Someone help!P.S. I'll be 19 in sept. so I have that working against me too. Reply to this Question Share |

Your first step should be to talk to somebody at your school, a careers councellor or student adviser. Tell them what you have told us.
Ask for advise and help to get on the right track. If it means taking a crumby job for a few years while you work your way through so be it. Night school is also an option, I am not sure about distance learning in the states, but worth a look. Explore ALL your options, if you are looking for work and its just not happening ask somebody for advise, maybe you are dressing inappropriately for the interview, or, like a young lady I know who was looking for work, using language considered a bit blue without even realising it. (She went in and said "I'm here about the f*cking job), it wasnt until i pointed out how often she used the word that she realised what she was doing.
Don't give up, while sometimes we need to adapt and alter our lifes paths to suit our circumstances we should never give up on our dreams. It took me a long time to find the job I really love that feels it was created just for me.
Good luck, I wish you well
