How do I know if he sees me as more than just a friend?

I have the same problem, but ya know what, sometimes its nice to be in this role. You are his best friend. Give it time, it sounds like you two have a strong connection, his relationship might not last and then you should perhaps bring it up, in the meantime be his friend, being as he's taken. Its up to him which girl he wants, even if his actions scream 'you' in reality he's dating someone else.
