Another factor could be that we just didn't find each other interesting.I'm thinking of asking her out on a second date. We have a few personal things in common (e.g. we are both shy) but no activities. Although opposites do attract as they say.The problem I have is that I don't know if is just another one off date or the start of a long relationship. I'm very inexperienced at dating so I'm worried that I could ruin a potential relationship because I don't know what to do. How do I know if a date is going to become a future relationship?

If you are that concerned that the second date will end up like the first, you could just try asking her out for a cup of cofffee or something, it does not have to be a long date just an hour and see how things go, first dates can be awkward so it is always worth trying again.
Take care.xx.

A date is just the part where you get to know each other, the next step is feeling for each other after you had known one another better. Don't worry about ruining a potential relationship, a relationship is there for you if she's the right one.
