How do I know he's not just stringing me along?

The problem is that my boyfriend has a child from a previous relationship. At first when he told me I was fine with it. He is a loving man who is devoted to me but lately he has been spending time elsewhere and his excuses don't make sense. He's known me for 6 months and the baby's mother for 10 years but claims he wants to marry me. How do I know he's not just stringing me along?
