What's wrong with just going over and saying hello? Maybe if you see him alone playing on his phone or reading a book or something, you could make small talk over it.
It'd be a good way to show that you're into him and also that you're confident. I think a guy would like a girl to approach them for once, I know I'd appreciate that anyways.

 Go to school looking really pretty and literally "accidentally" bump into him, drop something that your holding and see if he picks it up for you then say sorry, and smile sweetly, casually "bump" into him a few more times then introduce yourself, what's the worst that can happen?
