I started a recruitment business in 2015.

Everything got officially sorted in September 2016. I currently work part time in a job I hate and as much as I'm trying my hardest to get clients it just seems to be going so slow I keep having good days and bad days where I'm confident then days I'm not confident with it.

All I want is my company to take off so I can get back to how my life used to be. Any thoughts from anyone I don't know what I'm asking just an over view of how I'm feeling.

Focus on a clear niche. Specialists do better than broad approach. Get out and network face to face and use linked in. You need to think of one approach you adopt for recruitment that makes you stand out as different and brilliant. Go to the CIPD show and other exhibitions. Social media used well will raise your profile.

Hi Anon,

Sales are king in every business. What have you done to Market the business in ways of advertising, Seo, telecan etc? Who are you targeting? Do you have a business plan? Where are your current clients coming from? What is your current experience in starting business? A year is a long time for a business to get started, why has it taken that long?

Aunty BimBim agony auntAre you recruiting for all industries or more of a niche market?

I've just spent three very tiring weeks with a women who is building her own business, she is ALWAYS at work, even when being casual she makes sure she is wearing clothes she wont be embarrassed for her clients to see her in, she always has business cards handy, she strikes up conversations with everybody she comes across and somehow or other the conversation always comes back to her business.

She networks and attends training sessions and my gut feeling is that she is going places.

So, network, cold call people who work in the areas you are interested in, write a blog giving tips on hiring or how to fire or how to dress for an interview, work out how to make sure your blog is close to the top in a google search, create a facebook page promoting your business and spend some advertising dollars.....

Good luck, I should imagine your emotions will be mixed at the moment, a touch of fear a touch of exhaustion and a double dose of excitement :-)

A male reader, Denizen United Kingdom +, writes (21 October 2016):

Denizen agony auntWhat kind of business have you started? There will be many factors affecting the ebb and flow of your business. You will learn its rhythms over time. Once you are confident that trade will come in its due time you learn to take your breaks; your rest periods.

If you have done your research. If you know that there is a market for your product, you are sure that you are offering a good product at a good price, and your customers know where to find you then you have a good chance of success.

Remember that what you are offering has to have value for the public. That is crucial.

Firstly, Congratulations for the new startup! It is not easy to start a business and it is great to see that you have been able to successfully launch your own company. It is not easy to go official and you have done the hard part. Well done!

You have so recently started it and it will certainly take atleast a few more months for you to settle. I understand that it is hard to work in place that you dont enjoy but it is only temporary. A job that pays your bills presently. Your focus should be on your business the moment you are out of the part-time job. You need to focus of identifying various ways to grow your business. You can identify growing companies that are looking at expansion. Talk to the HR department and understand their growth strategy. Additionally, Recruitment business works a lot on word of mouth. Internationals can be a good start. For example if you are able to place a Chinese or an Indian successfully then you will automatically be flooded with references from them. The same logic will apply for companies, if you are able to scan a shortlist candidates of the required skills then you will win over them.

Its a great success that you have sorted all the formalities so quickly. It is your determination that has brought you so far. Keep it going and success will kiss your feet.
