reader, anonymous, writes (2 December 2015): Tell him you would like him to hold your hand, and he shouldn't care what his "exes" think. He's with you now, not them! He should always be a gentlemen, and step in when he sees mean girls bullying you. That's what boyfriends are supposed to do. Protect you.
You must also stand-up for yourself. Let someone of authority know when you are being bullied, not only your boyfriend.
Most of all, tell him you expect him to act like your boyfriend; if he really wants you to be his girlfriend.
Take his hand and hold it when you're alone with him and let him get used to doing it. He's only around 13, and boys aren't always good at stuff like that. They learn this from girls. Your friends do it mostly to show-off and to get attention. Do it when you're alone, that's when it means more. Not just for public display! That's why he gets embarrassed.
He should still hold your hand. That's also what boyfriends are supposed to do. If he won't; then you will have to find a boy you like, who likes you enough to do it.
