Round up some mutual friends of both of yours who are in the know about your situation but won't like embarrass you in front of him or make it awquard and just casually bring it up in conversation and say he's welcome to come along. If he likes you like he says he does unless he's got a decent excuse he'll go! If he says no then you have your answer, and go out anyway have a good day out with your mates and move on from him.
