Ciar is quite-right... HOWEVER you will have to make sure that you are not so quiet as to appear disinterested and standoffish......
The best and easiest way to start and keep "conversations" going is to ask open-ended questions that let the other person - your clients - talk about THEMSELVES. WHO DOESN'T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THEMSELVES???????
Questions such as: Wow, you've got a great head of hair,.... did one of your parents or grandparents pass it along to you???? Or, Cripes, it's cold/hot outside today... how ABOUT this weather?
You can and will learn to guage just how much (if any) chit-chat is preferred and appropriate with each of your clients....
Over time, you will probably find that your clients like to come to you because you are a "wonderful conversationalist"!!!! ... and this, because you expressed interest in THEM!!!!
Good luck....

The word is 'converse', but to answer your question you may be surprised to learn most clients don't really want a lot of idle chit chat. Some procedures are quite relaxing and we like to lose ourselves in our own thoughts. Most of us actually wish the person doing our hair or giving us that pedicure would shut the hell up so we can relax and enjoy it.
There are plenty of chatter bug beauticians out there and the clients who want them will go to them. Customers who want a good job and a relaxing experience will come to you so relax and just be yourself.
