I'm not sure how to build myself up to be able to handle confrontation with people at work, or the doctors surgery. I don't feel heard.

Hi there!
I'm sorry your finding it quite difficult at the moment to become more assertive and stand your ground. Always remember to take small steps, you don't have to do everything at once. Perhaps with work if you are having a problem go to the person you are closest too and let them know how you are feeling. At the end of the day our colleagues will want you to feel safe and happy in your job so if you are feeling anxious about something i'm sure they would want to help as much as possible!
Once you have done this and have realised that it wasn't so hard (because usually the thought of doing something is actually scarier than the act itself) you will feel more confident to confront people in the future.
I hope this helped:)
