How come the sudden silence, and then surprise phone calls after I started calling him?

Ok this may sound stupid (lol) but a while back ago I've realized that my boyfriend hasn't been calling me as much anymore. Actually I'm going to say he stopped altogether haha, but he kept texting me though! After my realization I started to call him just to say hi and then boom! All of a sudden he starts calling me out of the blue periodically! I was wondering.......how come the sudden silence, and then surprise phone calls after I started calling him?
