How can you love someone but not BE in love with them?

yes, what is the diffrents in someome thats been apart from you said that they love you deeply but there not sure if they are in love with you? my boyfriend and I have a five year relationship living together and the other four living apart about 45 min away. He tells me that since we have lived apart he doesnt feel that same bonding feeling like befor when we lived together however my feelings havnt changed at all for him. He said he stills loves me deeply but is not sure if hes still in love with me . I dont understand what he really means in this can you tell me?
