Let me give you an example:
I got married in the UK to an American, moved to the US, moved to the Netherlands, and got divorced there using a lawyer based in Guam.
Net result:
- UK still thinks I'm married
- Americans (should) know I'm divorced, since Guam is US
- The dutch refuse to accept I'm divorced (even though my ex-wife now lives in Sweden) because they won't accept a fax from Guam. So they 'know' but won't act on it
This illustrates the mess that divorce can be... and shows that the idea that you can go to one place to find out if someone is divorced is... somewhat flawed.
Your best bet is probably to find out where he got divorced (you'll have to ask him), and especially who they filed the divorce with. You can then check with that authority.
