I guess through all that i liked her but she always seemed to have a boyfriend and i didnt want to ruin our friendship. Well we grew apart last year when she started dating someone else and to be honest i missed not talking to her anymore, and i wish we hadn't grown apart, now she broke up with her bf, and ive finally come to realize that i really do like her and i want to date her because normally her other bfs wouldnt be the best types (controlling, ignore her all the time, make her sad etc.) But i know i wouldnt treat her this way because i hate seeing her sad.So how should i go about telling her all this and asking her out because i cant just sit on the sidelines anymore and see her sad anymore and not expressing my true feelings

All you can do is tell her how you feel. Tell her you fancy her and would love to get to know her even more. You have nothing to lose by trying.
