writes:i want to get to know more people who i am friends with on facebook and get to see what my old class mates are doing these days and to chat to people at my college who i see every day but i don't want to sound pushy or desperate and i don't want to embarrass myself. how do i start a conversation off and what sort of things should i say?

 I've found that 'friendship reunited' is a better site for this. I'ts free to register and you get to see all your old class mates throughout the years, listed, and pictures. You can even leave messages for them, or comment on school photos etc.
