Major companies in specialist industries (such as engineering for example) would be a good place to start if you are qualified for that sort of thing, or anything medical/surgeon/doctor/ possibly even nursing. It pretty much as to be an industry where there is a high demand, and sometimes the contract may only last 3-4 years. I'm not sure about the US and Canada, but some countries will allow students come for a year or two on a student visa, which may allow you to work part time in your more basic industries.

Canadian immigration works on a points system. Points are gained for things like education. If you didn't study much and don't have skills that are in short supply in Canada, your chances are poor.
