Hahah, I just read strongfp's answer, I didnt read it before I posted mine. My post was not meant to oppose his post, my post just comes from my personal experience with weight gaining. What I have personally experienced is that it is good with protein rich foods and iron rich foods, which is basically in red meat. White rice contains so to speak no nutrition. Potatoes on the other hand will do you good.
Again, just my personal experience. For underweight or thin people it is very easy to get sick if you don't get enough nutrition.

But, in order to gain weight you need to eat and work out. Muscles weight more than fat. Also you should eat food with protein and iron. Like meats, eggs, fish, red meat in particular for the iron. I know meats are expensive, but you will not gain weight from eating rice or vegetables all the time. Eating sugar might make you put on weight, but it also might just make you sick because sugar and sweets don't contain any nutrition...
