How can I encourage my baby to sleep alone without being unkind?

A female United States age 41-50, *intaras writes:

I am a first time mom. My baby girl is 3 weeks old. I have a bassinet in my room. I learned the first week she came home, that she will sleep for 4 hours plus if she sleeps next to me in my bed. If I put her in her bassinet, she'd only sleep for maybe 2 - 2 1/2. I have now noticed that when I now put her in her bassinet, after about 15 minutes she wakes up and won't go to sleep, even if I stand there, so she knows I am still close. I have read that she is too young to spoil right now. I also read that I should let her cry for 10 minutes. I feel she is too small for me to let her cry and it makes me feel guilty because she is so young. Any help would be so appreciated. I just don't want to end up with her not being able to sleep unless she is in bed with me.

Hi hunny,

I never let the children in my bed but they were with me in my room for a year, then had there own rooms... Children become used to mum and can be a little clever at knowing mum will pick us up when we yell but your little bundle of joy is not old enough yet to have grasped this but you will notice in time how they work, when your a new mum you worry your doing something wrong, but im sure your doing everything right babys like feeding cleaning and winding and sleeping and they love cuddles. Alot of people dont agree with a soother but i do for a short period of time its a comforter and helped my little ones get to sleep then at 3months they spat them out and that was that you cant go wrong hunny you sound like a fab mum... congratulations...
