How can I be anorexic if I'm not slim//skinny?

I dont have an account so please check in as I will hopefully update daily if necessary.

I have been overweight for about 6 years (comfort ate).

I have been anorexic and had the mindset of a bulimic for about 8 months and it pretty much snuck up on me because I had lost weight and hadn't realised until my mum mentioned it and my trousers were a bit looser.

I struggle with some things because of the anorexia and bulimic mind set but nobody believes it because I'm still overweight.

I don't know if they think I'm just attention seeking when I don't eat (I don't make a big deal of it but they do sometimes). I don't even tell people anymore because they just seem skeptical like I'm lying or the reaction is like "how are you anorexic if you're still overweight?"

I don't completey understand it myself - how can I be anorexic if I'm not slim//skinny? Is there any point telling people when they make a fuss about me not eating?

k_c100 agony auntYou need to seek help from another doctor, and ideally a therapist/counsellor. Yes you may be overweight now, but if you are losing on average a stone a month you will be underweight in no time at all, and putting your health massively at risk. If your normal doctor wont listen to you, see another doctor and make them realise how serious this is. Just because you are a bit overweight now doesnt mean that you are not damaging your insides by your extreme diet, your body will be shutting down in all kinds of ways and that is very bad for you. Talk to as many doctors as you need to until one of them listens to you.

There will be a reason why you stopped eating, so that is why I suggest you need to see a therapist, they will be able to help you see what has caused this illness and how you can overcome it. There are many free therapist services for young people, and your parents dont even need to know if you dont want them to, just google therapist services for teenagers or something like that you and you will find lots of help online.

You need to realise how serious this is, anorexia will kill you so even though you are not skinny now, you will soon be very skinny, and then you will be severely underweight at which point you will probably end up in hospital.

Dont tell your friends, they are not going to understand - you need to tell your family and a doctor. They are the only people that can help you. And if you are still getting no help from them, seek help from an advice site online.

Please seek help as soon as you can - your body wont survive for too much longer eating such a tiny amount of food, so you need to take action now before you do some permanent damage to your health.

k_c100 agony auntI think we need a bit more information before we can really help you.

Are you anorexic or bullemic? I.e. do you not eat (that's anorexia)? Or do you binge and then throw up (that's bullemia)? You say you have stopped telling people that you have an eating disorder - who are you telling? Have you seen a doctor? How much weight have you lost? What do you eat on an average day? Why have you stopped eating? What has made you go from comfort eating to not eating?

If you can give more information we might be able to give you better answers.

A reader, anonymous, writes (14 September 2012):

Anorexia isn't a physical illness, its a psychological one. People with anorexia have an obsession with their physical image where weight is concerned. Just because you're not skinny, doesn't mean you're NOT anorexic either. Anorexia has a starting point, and that point usually is if a person is/or in their own mind, overweight. The reason most anorexic people are skinny is because they've already neglect their body to that point by not eating, in an attempt to become or remain skinny.

I wouldn't really talk to your friends about this as they won't really understand the depths of anorexia, they become skeptical as you said, because you're not skinny and they only take on board the part when a person with anorexia becomes dangerously underweight, they don't take on board the real cause which is the psychological side.

I would talk to your parents and let them in on your problem, and also speak to your GP. You may not be dangerously underweight yet, but if this is left untreated, the obsession will grow and before you know it, your life will be in danger because you've become that dangerously underweight and unhealthy from not eating, you'll pretty much be a walking skeleton. Then you'll have the physical health to contend with as well as the mental health side of this illness. Its not the sort of experience anybody wants in life, but especially not at your age.
