Mostly because we are not apes.
We have a brain, and we actually LIKE the guy we are with.
It's not all about getting higher in the pack order and finding the best man to father our children any more.
Look up evolution and see that we are actually different from merecats. That's why you never see an otter with an iPhone.

 I'll answer your question with a simple example: I drive a 10 year old Honda CRV but I can afford to pay cash to buy the new Mercedes CLK. I don't care! I love my old CRV, we've been through a lot of off road adventures together and endless hours touring together, never let me down and very low maintenance, and I like its looks even though it's old fashioned for others. In a few words "I just love it!!" Hope this answered your question!

 huh? I am turned on by the nature of a person - not the BS side issues of status, wealth, fame, etc, that really dont say much about them as a person.
*sighs* I really need to get out more if I am scratching my head in bewilderment that people really do look for partners based on things other than the human qualities we all have equal opportunity to possess.
Hitler was confident (tho to the point of delusion), wealthy, famous, blah blah blah, ..mmm what a catch he would have been. NOT! Think about it!
