You can understand his mum and sister freaking out can't you? He's only 13 and I'm pretty sure that they can't believe he is gay at such a young age.
At 16 they may be able to accept it; but if I had a 13 year old kid I wouldn't like them to have decided that they should be seeing members of the same sex -- not because I'm homophobic...but because he is still a child who has barely just started puberty...and so he is not aware of his own feelings.
You're right, people will think weirdly about the age difference.
I suggest you either wait a few years...or you find someone your age to have a relationship with.
