When my husband was in basic, they were able to call from a pay phone on the weekends since they confiscate your mobile in the beginning. He says it has changed now, but when you're in basic training you're working pretty much all day and weekends too.
Now when they're deployed, they can email, Facebook, call from prepaid cellulars you can purchase in Afghanistan almost daily. Depending on their job, they can be out in the field working for days on and end( about 16)..that's when you won't get a phone call or email. But there's no need to fret, he'll contact you when he can.
Good luck being a army girlfriend, it's a tough position to be in.

The army these days are pretty flexible with communication. It honestly depends on the job that your man is doing... But don't worry you won't go for months without contact from him. The only time that would ever happen is if base is being attacked or hes being sent out. But even then he can send you letters and call you when he has free time.
But since he is in training he will be able to contact you very often actually. I'm pretty sure they have full access to social networks and communication on the weekends. Other than that a call every 2nd or 3rd night.
Don't worry so much dear, it will be a big test on your relationship though.
