He's going through a hard time right now, how can I be his friend?

hey guys . i love my boyfriend and i would and do go out of my way for him , he has been feeling a little -off- lately , not doing that great at college , job going nowhere and he lives alone so i guess he is lonely sometimes, i dont what to do but listen - when he talks which isnt a lot - and i'm clueless about what to do i feel helpless and useless i just keep telling him i love him .. the thing is we never were friends we started dating right away so i'm still trying to figure out how to be his -friend- any ideas guys, when your're down what can your g/f do to help
