Now he is confused, he does not want to get hurt again and says that people say it won't workout, it never does after a break up. He went through a very rough time after the breaking up, and when he had picked himself up again I showed up. Do you think it can work?

however
I do suggest you have to resolve the issues that caused the break up in the first place; if those issues are not resolved; I do believe it can cause problems in the future again.
If you both want to make the relationship work and are comitted to it; I suggest you work on what caused the problems and if need be get couple counseling to overcome the problems;
Best wishes and lots of SMILES

But if there are trust issues involved that resulted in the breakup it can be quite hard. The two of you have a lot of talking to do, he obviously in frightened about being hurt again, so something went wrong. Be gentle with each other, talk honestly and very important...tell your and his friends to shut up and mind their own business.
