Yes, it is completely normal.

A year after my girlfriend and I started going out we had to spend a year apart. While we were apart we talked on the phone a lot. Sometimes I longed to be with her again, and sometimes I felt like she wasn't really my girlfriend anymore.

I became really close friends with another girl, and started spending a lot of time with her - we went to dances together, held hands, but never did anything more. I seriously considered braking up with my girlfriend, but could never actually do it. That was 4 years ago, and we are still together, and have been living together happily for 2 years now.

On the other hand, I think I would have also been happy with the other girl...
