Her ex destroyed my property, what should I do?

A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm 24, my girlfriend's 23, and we've been dating for 6 months.

Her ex has tried to complicate things though - he threw a brick through our window, let the tyres down on my car, and has tried to follow me to work.

I reported it to the police, but they were uninterested, claiming "Unless it involves car crime, closed-circuit television, or drink-driving, then we will not help you. It's a civil dispute!"

How bad can you get? I feel disgusted by their attitude!

I don't want to be intimidated by her ex - who is actually a very small man - 5ft"2 tall.

My girlfriend broke up with him due to his boozing and pot-smoking habit, and the fact he emailed pictures of his penis to other girls. She says I'm far nicer by comparison.

However, he's been trying to win her back lately.

I don't know how to resolve this - the police are not interested, my girlfriend doesn't want to see him again (perhaps for the best!), I feel like I'm in a dead end, so where do I go from here?

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 August 2009):

You take a big baseball bat and go find the little turd on the playground and raise up to his head level and you tell him if he doesn't leave her and you both alone starting today, his head is going to meet the bat next time, and then you walk away, after he gets on his trike or gets in his car and leaves.

The way to deal with bullies is to not back down when they try and bully you by speaking assertively and telling him specifically what you expect him to do...the baseball bat is for effect.

If you can file a protection order, actually, your girlfriend will most likely have to be the one to do it as she has the relationship with him, not you.

Good luck, sorry to hear he is such a nutjob.

A female reader, Rosy United Kingdom +, writes (19 August 2009):

Go back to the police, ask to speak someone more senior, and tell them what happened...throwin a brick through your window is criminal damage! If that doesnt help go to the Complaints commision, there should be one in whatever country you are in. About the bf, ask your gf for support as she may not have told him to leave her alone. If u can move away thn do that.
