Question - (27 January 2009) 1 Answers - (Newest, 29 January 2009)
A female Canada age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Hey! I'm 13 weeks and 4 days pregnant with my first child. Recently I have been experiencing period like cramps that last for about a minute or two then go away. They occur about five times a day. There is no blood or clear fluid coming out, but they concern me? My mom says they may be Braxton-Hicks contrations, or just the pain a my ligaments stretching. I don't see the doctor for another two weeks, should I be concerned or is this normal. I am quite thin and always have been, if that may play a part in it. Please help!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (29 January 2009):

I had the exact same problem! I am 22 weeks and 3 days prego. From about week 7 to week 18 I had god awful cramps! The first bad thing it could be is an ectopic pregnancy. If your doc has already done an exam and ruled it out, its just round ligament pain. The pain can be mild to severe. Mine was severe lasting several hours or more at a time.I had several different trips to the emergency room and was on different meds for the pain. Round ligament is the circular muscle around your uterus and bladder. Its the same muscle you use to stop the flow of urine. As your uterus stretches so does that muscle! And it can seriously hurt. Its not dangerous and you should be fine if that's what it is. Braxton Hicks are very rare this early on in a pregnancy. Call your doctor if you are still worried and he should be able to console you or give you advice on what to do. If the pain is not too bad 2 500 mg tylenol are safe to take every 6 hours. Also a heating pad on very low with a towel between you and the pad for a few minutes can help relax the muscle.

Hope this can help you to feel better!
