A female , anonymous writes:

Last week one of my best mates told me he had feelings for me, but he is going out with one of my other best mates. He asked me not to tell her and I said yes, but I was still very confused and upset whether or not to tell her, so I left it.

Now today I found out that it was a trick to see if I was a good mate and to see if I would tell her. Now I just feel upset and betrayed and my mate has fallen out with me. What should I do??

A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 February 2006):

That lad was wrong, it's not fair to treat someone in this way, everyone has feelings. You were obviously upset and confused when this lad told you that, there'sno misteking that. Tell your best mate 'Listen, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to upset you, but I was so confused and I didn't know what to do. I still want you as my best friend though. That boy told me he fancied me, and I was so confused and upset. The first thing I thought about was you. Put yourself in my position, I've put myself in yours and I'm sorry. Can we just forget the whole thing, and make up?' or something along those lines. Remember to say it calmly, without getting annoyed at her. Mates are more likely to listen if you're calm. If she doesn't listening then that means she's putting the lad over you, best friends should always put their mates first, and if she's not prepared to do that, then maybe she's not a friend worth having. If that's the case, make some new friends, although you'll never replace her, new friends are better than no friends. Good luck! XXX
