You will have to ask HIM what that means to HIM.
Just ask.."Hey, I do not know what unofficial means, and I want to make sure I understand."
Bring it up when you have a quiet moment to the two of you. You will know when it feels ok to bring it up.

If he said your relationship is unofficial, it means you're just dating and are still free to date other people as well.
