He might be moving away so I am trying to distance myself, but he is still calling me baby!

So I've been dating this guy for a few months and we have been spending time together at least once or twice a week. It is hard for both of us since I work 12 hr night shifts and he works M-F, and sometimes I work weekends. So we see each other when we can. He is a gentleman all the time, treats me well and always initiates. Recently I found out that he might be moving to another state for a job offer if he gets it (he hates his current job and is always stressed out by it). He moved to my state because of a job and he didn't know anyone so it was hard for him. He might be moving soon so I'm trying to distance myself...but he still calls me "baby" and contacts me. What gives? On top of that, we haven't been dating long to survive a LDR, he's a great guy and I would like to be friends with him...but is that a good idea?
