It's my third year in college but my second year with this class and all last year he was quite a nob head to be around and just mean to people but he was okay with me and a couple of my friends. Towards the end of the year and through the summer we got good friends and we would text and stuff and he'd be really sweet and compliment me and stuff but this was a bit after he broke up with his girlfriend. He'd call me cute and when we had an induction day at college this year he even hugged me but since we started back properly he's got a girlfriend again and around his classmates acts like he hates me and just says mean things in a "jokey" way. But when he texts me he still calls me a cutie and compliments me and stuff so i dont understand what he's playing at all!

I agree with SVC - he is texting you compliments and lovey dovey stuff to keep you hooked JUST IN CASE he needs a FWB or someone to boost his ego.
Why on Earth you allow him to disrespect you when he is with his friends and then flirt on text is beyond me.
I would cut him off. 100%.

he's playing alright..
keeping you on a string teasing you along in case something with his new gf does not work out you will be the backup.
don't fall for it.
