Have to go swimming but have my period!

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hello. I have a minor problem that isn't life changing but it currently feels like a big problem!

Tomorrow I have to go swimming. I really have no choice in it. But I woke up this morning and my period had started unexpectedly.

I don't know what to do now. I know the obvious answer would be to wear a tampon but I don't have any and nor have I ever tried one. I'd have no idea what to buy or where to start. I'm not sure if I'd be able to get some by tomorrow anyway.

So is there anything I can do? Any advice from fellow females would be really REALLY appreciated.

Thank you... X

Not My Name agony auntI went to an all girls school, but we co-ordinated with the 2 other schools in the vicinity for classes which saw me landed in an all male Phys Ed class at a predominately male Tech School, ... just walking down the corridoors there sucked, ...but tell me that it was fun when we were training for our Bronze Medallion in swiming/lifesaving and for months I was not only having to rock up in a swin suit in front of 20 guys every week, being blatantly perved and commented upon, but having to deal with girly things on top of it. Near on nightmare ..lol

My mum was a prude too, and was opposed to tampons when I brought it up - like they take your virginity or something lol (not) - at least I think something silly like that was behind her pointless concerns, ... but I got an older cousin (married with kids) to have a rational talk with her and only had to fake a sicky for one swim class before she gave in and bought some.

Try just telling your mum first, and if she is like mine, try getting someone to get in her ear, ... if that is not possible either borrow a few off a friend or just go and buy a pack coz they are available just about anywhere.

Learning how to use tampons takes time and lots of practice so I wouldn't advise you to start now, because you are in such a hurry. You say you have to go swimming and you have no choice in it. How is that possible? Nobody can force you to go swimming if you don't want to. If you are too embarrassed to tell somebody you can't go swimming because of your period, the best thing you can do to get out of it, is to make up an excuse. Say you are feeling a bit sick, you have a headache or something like that. Good luck!

BettyBoup agony auntHi there.

Do you have an older female you can talk to about this? Your mum, sister, aunt or a good friend? Tell them about your situation and I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you about tampons and will probably give you some, or ask them to go with you to the store to choose a pack. I'm sure most girls have been through this conundrum. If you put in a tampon at the swimming baths there won't be a problem. But at the end of the day if this really worrys you, you don't have to go! Say that you are not feeling well on that day or talk to a parent about it. You say you have no choice in it but everyone knows that having your period when you're a teenage girl is an issue and I'm sure they will be sympathetic no matter how embarraced you may feel.

Good luck hun!

A female reader, VictoriaK United States +, writes (7 February 2010):

VictoriaK agony auntWell, there's really no other way of getting around it. You have to buy tampons in order to go swimming. Pads would just just huge and filled with water. They aren't made for swimming. If you're just going to be going out for the day to swim then I suggest buying a small box of tampons. They usually sell them at the drug stores in boxes of 10. They come with instructions, and it may take a few tries, but you'll find that it will be more comfortable and fun then having to sit out from swimming. I do have a little piece of advice for you though that they fail to mention in the instructions on how to use them. If you have a lighter period, then an easy way to insert the tampon is to either use a bit of spit or lube to get it wetter. (Sounds gross, but it makes insertion much easier) Now the question of about what kind to buy. They have light, regular, super, and super plus. They have on the back of the box what to use if you for example are losing 1 tablespoon a day. Now I don't know about you, but I never have, nor will I ever sit on the toilet all day to figure out how much I'm bleeding per day. The best bet is to take a guess. If you have a light period and you don't expect it to get heavy then you get light or regular tampons. Super and super plus are usually for women that have very heavy periods. Also be on the safe side, if you aren't sure about it then maybe you could ask the pharmacist. After all they are there to help you. If you are too embarrassed to ask them then it is always safer to go with light or regular tampons. I say this because if you get ones that are "super" and you think you can leave it in for a longer time because it's bigger and will absorb more then you are playing with your life. If you google Toxic Shock Syndrome you'll understand what I mean. Try talking to a parent or trusted adult. They usually understand these issues, and will help you. I hope this advice helped a bit.

jaime90 agony auntyou will be able to get them in time.. any chemist, supermarket, convenience store will have them.

without using a tampon you wont be able to go swimming, so you either have to wear one or not swim.

since its your first time using one get a slim mini, if you need help maybe ask your mum or a friend who has used before
