writes: Hi i have had glandular fever for the last 3 weeks. I got it off my boyfriend as even though he doesnt have symptoms he tested positive for it. Just wondering if we were to start having sex again would i have a relapse or would he start getting symptoms of it? You cant catch it through sex, but as its also know as the kissing disease then you can get it through kissing or being in very close proximity to a person. So if you want sex use a position where your mouths are nowhere near each other!!!!

reader, anonymous, writes (7 June 2008): I have empathy with you; I had glandular fever at the age 17, and I was very ill; I did not follow doctors instructions and ended with some ovarian problems later, which the doctor then thought was due to me not staying in bed. I suggest you do follow the instructions of the medical proffesionnals.

Glandular fever has an active stage lasting a few weeks in which you have flu-like symptoms (2-4 weeks) and a chronic stage that can last for months or years. You should avoid alcohol for at least 6 weeks because the virus affects the liver and can give jaundice like symptoms. It is primarily transmitted by saliva from person to person. It is very rare to get glandular fever infection twice as your body can defend against it - hence your BF shouldnt be at risk. I would say avoid strenous activities until you feel well because your spleen can be enlarged during the acute phase of illness and not resting during the acute stage can risk prolonged symptoms of tiredness etc.
