Has anyone got any tips to help ease the itching for chicken pox.I am 27 years of age and it has been only half a day since the out of hours doctor confirmed I have got them.He prescribed aciclovir and obviously I started the course pronto. As well as taking an antihistamine and a paracetamol. I've been applying calamine lotion but I've read it does not particularly help the chicken pox itches.Of course I am dying to scratch myself to shreds, but I know not to as it will leave behind scars. I had a luke warm bath. All eased it a little. But is there something i could perhaps put in the bath. Apart from bicarbonate soda. Or apply to the spots themselves?I am normally a cheerful soul but of course i am feeling down in the dumps already. The urge to scratch and the fact i know i cannot are just getting me down and all irritable. So any suggestions to help ease this would be much appreciated. Thank you :( A miserable feeling soul.....

Just had another thought, perhaps put the calamine lotion or aloe in the fridge so it cools your really itchy spots, that way you're less likely to claw yourself.

I agree with Tennisstar 88 - Oatmeal and Aloe lotion is your best bet.

I had chicken pox when I was ten, I was covered in thousands (my mom and I counted over 1,700 before we stopped) and those were the only two things that helped the miserable feeling.
Also, i had chicken pox in my throat. For a few days I only could eat pudding and ice cream.
Finally, do NOT pick at the scabs. Any scab you pick at will leave a scar or crater. And...have someone go to the store for you. Chicken pox is highly contagious.

You could try moisturising rather than drying and see it that works better for you. I bought a bit bottle of an aloe vera gel, usually used for sunburn, and liberally applied it. Relieved the itching somewhat, but not in any sense a cure.
I sat under a blanket with my hands on top, so if I did subconsciously scratch then it had no effect.

Oooo so sorry to hear that, I hear getting chicken pox when you're an adult is horrible.
-Lukewarm bath with oatmeal. Aveeno makes an Oatmeal Bath.
-Trim your fingernails very short, so if you do scratch it won't tear your skin.
-Keep cool. Heat and sweat will make you itch more.
-Place a cool wet wash cloth on the really bad areas.
-And of course calamine lotion.
When I was a kid they lasted for about 2 weeks, and it was really bad the first week but they eased up the second week. Hope you feel better soon!
